Abstract:The author's participation in an academic conference on 'The future of the past', held on the Cape Flats, South Africa, was the result of an invitation to provide an insider perspective on the activities of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Research Department. The critical questions and discussions that followed his input made it clear that the TRC activities have raised a number of broader, critical questions among historians, challenging the nature, scope and legitimacy of the TRC. In this article the author reflects on some of these questions, and discusses the meaning of 'truth' within the TRC, the tensions between justice, truth and reconciliation, and the complexity of political crimes. He also comments on two more general issues highlighted by the discussion at the conference: the nature of the criticism and, the public, mediated nature of the TRC process. App., bibliogr.
