Abstract:	The main reason for rapid urban population growth in Kenya, according to the 1979 national census, is rural-urban migration. Today, thirteen years later, natural increase makes a significant contribution to urban population growth. The author looks at some of the constraints to family planning programmes in urban centres in Kenya. These constraints are basically sociocultural (the persistence of traditional cultural backgrounds, the association of contraception with sexual immorality), religious (opposition on the part of both the Catholic Church and a number of indigenous churches) and political (suspicion of the government's real intentions, the perception of family planning as a Western strategy to control the growth of black populations) in nature.
