| Abstract: | Pollution resulting from increasing human activities is threatening Lake Victoria, the largest African lake and of crucial socioeconomic importance for the nutrition of the surrounding population. The present study evaluates water pollution sources in the lake's catchment area in Tanzania. A set of methodological guidelines to estimate pollution loads is used to assess pollution from industrial (including mining), agricultural and domestic activities. Most pollution is of organic nature, with agriculture as the largest contributor of nutrients, originating mainly from manure. The largest point source pollution is of domestic waste, while industrial pollution is limited but growing rapidly. Lack of industrial and domestic waste management facilities and major shortcomings in waste treatment cause local nuisance and health hazards to the population in and near the urban centres of Bukoba, Mwanza and Musoma. Organization of environmental monitoring and management, as well as education efforts to stimulate environmental awareness, are recommended. Bibliogr., sum. |
