| Abstract: | This paper looks at the possible services the seed trade can offer to small-scale farmers in South Africa. In spite of the fact that agriculture is considered a success story in South Africa, black farmers have not shared in the modernization of agriculture. There is a large gap between commercial farming and black small-scale farming today. The Department of Agriculture recently established the BATAT programme (Broadening Access to Agricultural Thrust) in order to assist emergent black farmers. The seed trade has already proven, through its Peace Gardens Project (a social responsibility project initiated by Sansor (South African National Seed Organization) in 1991 with the aim of supporting food production in disadvantaged communities), that sufficient potential exists in disadvantaged communities to develop successful household, small-scale and commercial farms. Training is being focused on developing seed trade expertise at the company level, as well as in a national and regional context. These efforts could be strengthened by collaboration with other industries represented in the Agricultural Input Suppliers Forum. The seed trade has the potential to make a meaningful contribution to the development of the emerging small-scale farming sector. Bibliogr. |
