Abstract:The Eastern Zone of Tigray (Ethiopia) suffers from erratic and insufficient rainfall. The nature of the rainfall is the main constraint to crop and livestock production. The area is further characterized by high and growing population pressure. Scarcity of pasture and forest land and reduced farm size have forced many farmers to remove practically all crop residues for use as feed, fuel and construction material. Fieldwork was carried out in the area in order to assess the effects of erratic and insufficient rainfall on the livelihoods of the people, and the kind of research input needed to reduce these effects. Specific recommendations are made regarding the strengthening of farmers' involvement in research and development activities in order to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of research.
