Abstract:This publication contains the proceedings of a seminar on HIV/AIDS and female circumcision in Muslim areas of Kenya held at Naivasha, Kenya, in July 1995. It includes the keynote address, summaries of group discussions and draft resolutions, and resource papers dealing with HIV/AIDS in Kenya (Surow Adan Adaw, Halima Abdullah Mwenesi, Dabar Abdi Maalim, Hamad Mohammed Kassim, Ali Shee) and with female circumcision, amongst others among the Somali and Boran, related health problems and the position of Islam (Hassan Dahiya, Ramadhan Marjan, Aisha Jama, Fatuma S. Abdulkadr, Ibrahim Lethome, Abdisalam Sheik Mohammed). The seminar was attended by about fifty persons representing Muslim scholars, doctors, health professionals, researchers and women representatives. Its aim was, amongst others, to seek advice on the best way of disseminating information to the Muslim communities and the nomadic pastoralists of northeast Kenya, whose conservatism and overprotectiveness of their culture and religion place a taboo on the discussion of sexual matters and isolate them from information, leaving them in ignorance of the threat of both AIDS and female circumcision.
