| Abstract: | The influx of large numbers of refugees into Tanzania in recent years has led the government to contemplate a major reform of the law relating to the legal status of refugees. The present law, contained in the Refugees (Control) Act, 1966, is clearly inadequate, and in 1991 the government drafted a bill (the Refugees Bill) to replace it. The author examines the shortcomings of the 1966 Act and analyses the new bill both in the context of the international law relating to refugees and as an appropriate response to the problems facing Tanzania.
