Abstract: | This article surveys the irrigation geography of the Sudan on the basis of field studies carried out in 1992-1994. Irrigation schemes are analysed according to the relation between their aims (productive/strategic) and the amount of resources invested by the State, on the one hand, and the quality of resources (energy/information) and the hydraulic operations' importance to the State, on the other hand. The analysis has a chronological aspect (before independence in 1956; birth and formation of the State, from 1956 to 1983; crisis of the State, since 1983) and a regional aspect (the productive centre: Gezira and Rahad; the productive periphery: Nubia and the banks of the White Nile; strategic borders: West, Gash and New Halfa). Notes, ref., sum. in English and French, text in Italian. |
