Abstract:In a remote area of Sudan, 700 miles south of Khartoum, the Abyei project embodied the idealistic hopes of the 'new directions' for development aid of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Within this optimistic context, the Harvard Institute for International Development (HIID) was invited to assist the leaders of the Ngok Dinka people in developing their homeland, which straddles the political, ethnic, religious, and ecological divide between northern and southern Sudan. This book tells the story of the project's successes and failures in a highly charged political environment.
