Abstract:This article examines linkages between the globalization of the world economy and changes in institutions of higher education, particularly universities. Reviewing some of the international literature, the article points to a marked shift in the orientation of the university captured in the notion of the 'market university'. The 'market university' is characterized by the increasing commodification of knowledge, which impacts on the governance of universities and on the production and dissemination of knowledge. The author differentiates three types of knowledge, namely academic, market and social, and identifies two phenomena that are prominent in higher education policy debates, namely intellectual property rights and technology transfer. The scale and form of technology transfer has changed dramatically in the late 1980s and 1990s. A further feature of this period is the increasing fragmentation of teaching and research. All of these factors demonstrate the increasing pressures on universities and other institutions of higher education to 'serve the needs of the economy'. The trends which have manifested themselves in Western Europe and the USA are beginning to emerge in South Africa. Bibliogr., ref.
