Abstract: | South Africa's universities, like Anglo-Saxon type universities in general, have tended to keep science in the ivory tower. They stress science and not its application, and the links between universities and the business sector are poorly developed. Given South Africa's developmental problems, the need to give more support to technology and the need to develop programmes to establish firmer links between the universities and other research and development performers, more especially firms, is clearly evident. A recent White Paper on Science and Technology has recognized that problem. There is currently one programme which specifically seeks to link research in the higher education sector with firms, namely, the Technology and Human Resources for Industry Programme (THRIP). But there is much more that can and should be done. The flow of persons between the two sectors must be encouraged, and the functioning of research administrations and research funding will need to be changed to provide support for research linkages.
