Abstract: | This paper examines Arabic literary activity among Osogbo Muslims. Religiously, the people of Osogbo (Nigeria) are a combination of Christians, pagans, syncretists, and Muslims. Surprisingly, although Muslims are in the minority, Arabic literary activities which accompanied the advent of Islam in the 19th century continued to thrive in the city. With the spread of Islam, the acquisition of the knowledge of the religion and the Arabic language became widespread and many Muslim scholars in Osogbo started to converse and write in Arabic, though the standard of their literary works was not all that high. The paper includes a select list of Arabic literary works of Osogbo ''ulema' published between 1943 and 1992. Notes, ref. |
