Abstract:Molokwane is a mega-sized stone-walled archaeological site in the Rustenburg district of South Africa. Diachronic evidence consisting of radiocarbon dates and stratigraphic and historical evidence indicates that the 'kgosing' (the main village of Molokwane, occupied by the Kwena chief) emerged during the middle of the 17th century. A royal lineage and chiefdom arose during the last two decades of the 17th century and the first seven decades of the 18th century. The chiefdom reached its zenith during the reign of Kgasoane, who ruled during the last quarter of the 18th century and the first quarter of the 19th century. The chiefdom was abruptly overturned during the 'difaqane' wars. Bibliogr., sum. in English and Afrikaans.
