Abstract:The Ghana National Bibliography is compiled at the George Padmore Research Library on African Affairs and published by the Ghana Library Board. Both the bimonthly supplement and the annual cumulation are compiled from catalogues and acquisitions lists of existing libraries in Ghana, but the majority of the items are based on materials received under the Book and Newspaper Registration Act (Act 73) of 1961. The bibliography includes everything about Ghana no matter where published and also everything by Ghanaians. The adoption of the ISBD has resulted in international recognition of the bibliography. The actual coverage of the bibliography, however, is very disturbing. There is a paucity of indigenous language publications. Nonbook materials are omitted altogether. There is an almost total exclusion of indigenous science and technology literature. Due to financial constraints and the high cost of printing, the bibliography does not appear regularly. The 1977 volume, for example, was published in 1986. The bibliography is not computerized and the human and material resources to carry out such a venture are not available. These are among the problems affecting the Ghana National Bibliography. Recommendations for their solution conclude the article. Ref.
