Abstract: | 'Bao' is a board game. It is played in a variety of versions in most parts of the world. Until now there have been no written records about the game of 'bao' in Malawi. In Mangochi and other nearby places, the most common version is the 'kabweza' and 'kuwo' with 'nkhomo' (counters) to facilitate the game. In Ngoni settlements, for example Mzimba and Ntcheu, the game is known as 'fuwa', 'chain' or 'changena'. This article provides an introduction to 'bao', with information on equipment and how to play the game, the rules and variations, strategies, goals and aims, and the end of the game. |
