Abstract: | Just after midnight, on 3 March 1959, Sir Robert Armitage, the Governor of Nyasaland (present-day Malawi), declared a state of emergency and proscribed the Nyasaland African Congress, Congress Youth League and the Congress Women's League. Leaders, including Dr Banda, the president-general, who had returned to Nyasaland only eight months earlier after an absence of over forty years, were arrested and placed in detention. The author gives an account of the minutiae involved both in Dr Banda's arrest and his release, thirteen months later, on 1 April 1960. Notes, ref. |
