Abstract:Desertification in Mauritania is a major environmental problem, involving loss of agricultural potential, reduction of livestock, and threatened loss of infrastructure and irrigated perimeters by encroaching sand, with serious economic and social consequences. The fight against desertification has always been an urgent preoccupation of the authorities. The majority of development projects which are undertaken are aimed at controlling environmental damage and focus on reafforestation, animal husbandry, hydraulics and hydroagriculture. To support these actions and incorporate them into an institutional framework, a number of measures have been implemented. However, there is no national legislation relating to the environment. And although they are an integral part of the possible solutions to desertification, very little has been done to involve the local people in the process. An environmental problem of this scale needs a wider approach. So far it has been dealt with only by sector and this accounts for the limited success obtained to date. In order to design a global strategy for environmental protection, Mauritania must define a clearcut policy for environmental management. A national environmental action plan would seem to be the best solution. Bibliogr.
