Abstract: | Among the different sources of water supply in Idikan-Ibadan in Oyo State, Nigeria, dug wells seem to be the most prone to nitrate contamination. The present study shows that wells with high nitrate levels were those located in close proximity to pit latrines and septic tanks. The nitrate values in water from the wells are also dependent upon the depth and construction of the wells. The wells in question are usually relatively simple and primitive, often shallow and unprotected. Thus they are easily subject to nitrate pollution from the surface, tanks or nearby open drains. There were also variations in nitrate values during both the wet and dry seasons, but the differences were not significant. Bibliogr. |
