Abstract:In her reflections on the theme of peace-building and community development in the context of South Africa, the author, Head of the International Desk at the Department of Welfare, Pretoria, discusses changing definitions of the concept of development, the notion of sustainable development, peace and conflict management as essential ingredients in successful development efforts, issues involved in the idea of human needs and their satisfaction, the importance of work and life values and the acceptance of cultural differences in this respect, and the contribution of the values of the ancient African wisdom of 'ubuntu' to assist in canonizing a people-centred orientation and empowerment in global communities. Her principal conclusion is that humanity will not achieve sustainability, equity, harmony, or happiness while growth, measured only by GNP, remains the only economic objective. The new objective involves the progressive bounding of economic activity by tight sustainability constraints, and the explicit direction of that activity by and towards positive human values such as personal development and quality of life, democracy and justice.
