Abstract: | Counselling and rehabilitation services for victims of human rights violations in Africa can be divided into two broad categories: those based in the home country of the victims, and those aimed at refugees in host countries in the same region. These two models are exemplified in this article through a comparative analysis of two major services: 1. IRCT (International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims) in Malawi, which treats Malawian torture survivors, and 2. Ipser (International Psycho-social and Socio-ecological Research Institute) in Uganda, where Sudanese refugees are counselled. Follow-up studies show that both approaches can be effective. A number of case studies demonstrate the psychopathological characteristics and the processes of therapeutic change of the victims of organized violence.
