Abstract:This paper is a preliminary account of the research undertaken since 1993 by an archaeological team from the British Institute in Eastern Africa (BIEA) at the ancient capital of Ethiopia, Aksum. The aims of this project are to continue the explorations in the central tomb-and-stelae complex, mainly excavating two monumental tombs. This emphasizes the elite sections of the Aksum population. To redress the balance, work is now being undertaken to try to determine the living conditions and burials of commoners, as well as on domestic economy and international trade. Sites of domestic occupation have been sought. This has required an archaeological survey in the environs of Aksum, to establish an understanding of relations between the centre and the hinterlands. This paper is a collaborative effort, various team members making their particular contribution on such topics as the Mausoleum, the Tomb of the Brick Arches, and the 'Gudit Stelae Field', the domestic area, archaeobotany, and artefacts.
