Abstract:Television can play a critical role in the politics of emerging democracies, such as Nigeria, for example by promoting national integration and a democratic political culture. Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) programmers may do well to realize that, with increased access to television programmes, many more (over thirty million) will be in a position to assess NTA performance directly. This is a challenge to offer the best in terms of concept, technical production and presentation. The Federal Military Government's Decree 38 of 24 August 1992 allows private broadcasting in Nigeria. In view of the damage which privately owned television can do in an emerging democracy - as the public relations outfit of rich Nigerians, through partisan reporting and unequal access, and because of the financial costs it entails - the policy to establish private television broadcasting in Nigeria should be suspended until the country's politics and economics improve.
