Abstract:This article summarizes the major findings of a nationwide baseline study of micro, small and medium enterprises in Eritrea, conducted in late 1995. Micro, small and medium enterprises, or MSMEs for short, were taken to refer to market-oriented, nonfarming, nonfishing business activities of manufacturing, trade and services that employ 25 people or less. The author highlights the types of small business activities in Eritrea, their geographical distribution, the size of employment they provide, some basic social and demographic characteristics of their proprietors, their business practices and the reported constraints of Eritrean MSMEs.
