Abstract: | The majority of girls in secondary schools in Nigeria no longer study mathematics and the few who do continue to have averagely lower achievement scores than boys. There is a pervasive idea that mathematics is a male domain. This notion is strengthened by the fact, demonstrated by various investigations, that many mathematics textbooks contain materials that are sex-role stereotyping, for example by depicting males in active, professional situations and females in domestic, passive roles. The present study examines the gender factor in seven common mathematics textbooks used in Nigerian secondary schools. The test items and illustrations in the textbooks were categorized as male related, female related, or neutral tasks. Simple percentages and chi square analysis indicated significant differences on the number of items and illustrations that were male or female related, to the detriment of females. Bibliogr., sum. |
