Abstract: | This article assesses the feasibility of Education For All by the year 2000 in Africa. It identifies and explores three basic challenges which EFA 2000 poses to teacher education in Africa: quality, quantity and relevance. The author discusses the problems faced by African countries and suggests possible ways in which teacher education could facilitate the attainment of some measure of success, referring amongst others to observations and recommendations from a UNESCO workshop attended by forty educationists from anglophone Africa held in Lomé, Togo, in September 1994. Many of the examples relate to the Zimbabwean experience, since the author is from the Department of Curriculum and Arts Education at the University of Zimbabwe. Bibliogr., sum. |
