Abstract: | The author describes how at the University of Botswana the teaching of English literature shifted from totally British during the colonial period to a mixture of British and African literature in the 1960s. In the 1970s African literature was the core of the Department of English literary culture. In the 1990s, the department had progressed beyond its earlier overemphasis on African literature to a well-integrated programme that is reflected in the curriculum. The department has as one of its focuses several African literature courses in both the undergraduate and graduate programmes. However, the fact that courses in African literature now form part of a wider range of courses offered in other literatures written in English shows the extent to which the department has made positive strides in projecting an image that is consistent with Botswana's postcolonial commitment to intercontinental and global cooperation.
