Abstract: | This paper presents the findings of a survey of the parallel pharmaceutical market conducted in 1996 in the Democratic Republic of Congo (then Zaire), sponsored by the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD). The survey focused on the sale of pharmaceuticals, but also looked at the wider social context and examined the international implications of the findings. The paper identifies the patterns in the parallel distribution of pharmaceuticals, looking at demand and supply in the informal sector, the quality of products, the way information about pharmaceuticals is obtained, and the levels of regulation of the informal market. It also briefly discusses the relationship between vendor and purchaser and the role of civic associations. The author concludes that a new approach to the informal healthcare market is required, in which government regulation and private sector forces are kept in balance. Bibliogr. |
