Abstract:Increased regional conflict and the resurgence of global activism have led to a dramatic growth in peacekeeping requirements since the end of the last decade. In South Africa President Mandela himself has eventually endorsed the possibility of a future peace support role in Africa for the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). This article assesses the anticipated future role of the South African military in peace support operations by focusing particularly on recent developments and on the conditions on the continent that need to be taken into account. Accordingly, it touches on the regional institutional framework created for the management of peace initiatives and cooperative security within southern Africa, after which it addresses some of the perils and challenges of peacekeeping, with special reference to the African context.
