Abstract: | Born in 1920, Kevin Carroll trained as a missionary at the Society of African Missions Novitiate, Kilcolgan, County Galway. His postings in Africa afforded him the opportunity of a profound encounter with African cultures in northern Nigeria, the Borgu area and particularly Yorubaland. This experience placed him in a vantage position when it came to the study, understanding and interpretation of African art, particularly Yoruba wood carving and the architectures of Nigeria. The present author reviews Carroll's writings on African art. In order to appreciate their significance, they are compared with the comments of other non-career Western scholars such as Robert Norris, John Adam, Hugh Clapperton, Richard Lander and William Clarke.
