Abstract: | The Gedaref District is the southern part of Kassala Province in the Eastern Region of the Sudan. The southern part is poor savannah country, the north semi-arid. Since the 1940s it has been economically important to the Sudan, being the second largest grain and animal market, and the government has developed several large mechanized agricultural schemes where the soil is relatively fertile and there is sufficient rainfall. This has led to environmental degradation, of which the basic, underlying causes are largely social. Pastoralists are driven off their traditional lands and then overgraze the areas to which they are pushed. Absentee landlordism has led to poor management and soil impoverishment through the overintensive monoculture of 'dura' (sorghum). Few of the profits made are reinvested in the area and the bulk of the 'dura' is also exported. This research was supported by USAID in the hope the data could be used for recommendations to improve the situation. Bibliogr. |
