Abstract:	This collection of essays is the outcome of a workshop on Ethnicity and the State in eastern Africa, held in Addis Ababa on 3-5 June 1996. The main objective of the workshop was to explore the impact of recent constitutional developments on ethnicity in Ethiopia; a second objective was to analyse the increasing prominence of ethnicity in eastern Africa.
