Abstract:This article highlights aspects of rural-urban interaction between the district headquarter town of Biharamulo and four surrounding villages in Kagera region, northwest Tanzania. While agriculture is the mainstay of the district economy, for many village households nonfarm and off-farm economic activities, in addition to agriculture, are central components in household security and accumulation strategies. The discussion is contextualized within a framework which identifies those households which would most likely be poor or, at least, vulnerable and insecure. Such households were identified as those being economically nondiversified. By contrast, more secure rural and urban households adopted a range of diversification strategies involving risk spreading by having one foot based in rural activities and one based in urban activities. Fieldwork was conducted in Biharamulo from January to March 1993, while the villages were surveyed in November 1993. Bibliogr., notes, ref.
