About person:Yakubu GowonISNI
Abstract:Yakubu Gowon, Nigeria's second military Head of State, and the prosecutor of the Nigerian civil war (1967-1970), on the federal side, like Odumegwu Ojukwu, the rebel leader, was undoubtedly a central character in the war. The present article is a critical examination of the role played by Yakubu Gowon in the processes and political events that led to the Nigerian civil war. It discusses his role in the January and July 1966 coups d'état, the nature of the conflict between himself and Ojukwu, and his dexterity at managing it, his ability to maintain cohesion within the Nigerian army, and his conception of the issue of secession and national unity in Nigeria.
