Abstract:The crucial issue in South African macroeconomic policy since the democratic elections of April 1994 has been the synchronization of the processes of economic reconstruction and political democratization. The source of the majority of South Africa's fundamental macroeconomic problems lies in poverty, inequality, unemployment and a slow growth rate, particularly in view of the high population pressure. The author outlines the basic economic challenges facing the postapartheid regime, discusses the long-term macroeconomic strategy as laid down in the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP), formally launched in 1994, and the government's five-year economic plan, Growth, Employment and Redistribution (GEAR), presented in June 1996, and assesses the medium-term results.
