Abstract:Central theme of the study is cross-cultural comparison from an ecological viewpoint of peoples living by various livelihoods - the environment features in each region and the people's actual adaption to their surroundings. Research was carried out in the equatorial zone of Africa - Kenya, Tanzania, and Zaire - among mainly pastoralists in arid regions in Kenya, slash-and-burn agriculturalists in Tanzania, and hunter-gatherers and agriculturalists in Zaire.
