Abstract:Traditional African drummers use mnemonic devices to assist them in the learning and execution of their music. The present article proposes a catalogue of drum mnemonics used by the Ewe, who live in the Volta Region of Ghana, and considers some of the ways in which the mnemonics could be categorized. It draws on the author's fieldwork studies (1986, 1992, 1996) and the work of other researchers, notably A.M. Jones (1959), H. Pantaleoni (1972), and D. Locke and G.K. Agbeli (1981).
