Abstract: | The geographic location of emHlahlandlela, one of Mzilikazi's village complexes in the Bankeveld, Northwest Province, South Africa, is contextualized by means of a synthesis of archaeological, historical and ethnographic evidence. The village complex was situated between the Kgatla (Pedi) and Kwena spheres of influence, to the northeast of modern-day Brits. The historical link between the Kgatla of the Bankeveld and the Pedi of Sekhukhuneland is indicated and it is concluded that Mzilikazi's occupation of the Steelpoort area (1822-1823) and the Bankeveld (1827-1832) must have led to more than one war between the Matabele and the Pedi.
