Abstract: | This paper examines risk and risk minimization among Himba pastoralists in northwestern Namibia. It is based on fieldwork carried out in 1994-1996 in the wider Epupa region. Risks can be divided into environmental risks (drought, degradation, livestock diseases) and risks arising from the political economy. The means of coping with these risks may be divided into those that directly address a disaster (food substitution, migration, social strategies) and those that help to prevent disasters and/or aid in restocking after disasters (exchange of livestock, diversification of economic activities, protection of pastures).
