Abstract: | This article gives an overview of Eritrean economic history from earliest times through independence, with a focus on the period 1890-1974. The main themes are the precolonial agropastoral economy, the Italian colonial economy (1890-1934), the war boom (1934-1945), depression (1946-1974), destruction (1975-1991) and reconstruction. It is clear that Eritrea's postindependence economy will have to be built on the foundations of the traditional pastoral and agricultural economies, combined with the legacy of Italian colonial development. History would seem to indicate that Eritrea's economic development will be best served by unrestricted transit trade with Ethiopia and Sudan, an emphasis on lowland irrigated agriculture and light industrial development for local and regional markets, and the rational development of the coast's hitherto underutilized marine and mineral resources.
