Abstract: | While a number of important studies exist on the trade and politics of the Niger and the Cross River, very little is known of the organization of trade on the waterways further inland; nor are there any serious studies on the nature of trade in any of the river ports and trading beaches which handled much of the expanding trade of the rich interior. This paper, focusing on the lake-town of Oguta which controlled the trade of the Orlu, Okigwi and Owerri areas for most of the colonial period, discusses the commercial history of Oguta in relation to the role of river transport in colonial development. Notes, fig., sum. (also in French). |
