Abstract:The salt extraction industry of Ada, at the mouth of the Volta river, Ghana, is an example of a traditional industry which did not decline or die out in the 19th and 20th centuries under the impact of mass-produced imported goods. This article describes the salt industry and trade in the two centuries and the failed attempts by the British to regulate the trade. Fig., notes, sum.
