Abstract:Information on the internal organisation and operation of the Portuguese post at Sao Jorge da Mina depends largely upon a regimento for the station written in 1529. However, one fifteenth-century document from Sao Jorge da Mina does exist which is of prime importance for estimating the composition of the garrison and gauging the extent of private trade at the post prior to 1500. Written at the fortress on the occasion of a regular change in the captaincy of Sao Jorge in 1499, this inquiricao covers the operations of the station during the term of the outgoing captain general, Lopa Soares de Albergaria, between 1495 and 1499. Notes, table.
