Abstract:The origin of Ogboni is wrapped in clever inventions and shrouded in obscurity. The Ogboni chiefs to-day, the members of the reformed Ogboni society, have different visions of the origin of Ogboni. Whatever the origin may be, 'Ogboni' or Oshubo as it is called in Ijebu (W. Nigeria), is usually derived from 'Ogbo', old age: 'eni ti o gbo' or 'eni ti o se ogbo' - 'One who belongs to the society of old men', and by implication the Ogboni is a conclave of 'Greyheaded old men of great experience and wisdom'. The Ogboni is the key to the Egba constitution. A study of the Ogboni gives one an insight into the fundamentals of Yoruba political theory.
