Abstract:This paper examines the relationship between gender and consumption poverty and between gender and deprivation in the Republic of Guinea. The sources of the data on which it is based are 1) a nationally representative World Bank/Government of Guinea Social Dimensions of Adjustment Integrated-type survey household survey conducted over the period January 1994-February 1995 (among a sample of 4,416 households with c. 29,000 individuals, and 2) a participatory poverty assessment conducted during one week in the village of Kamatiguia, Upper Guinea. The household survey data reveal that women are not more likely than men to be consumption poor or to suffer greater consumption poverty. The participatory poverty assessment data reveal that women are 'worse off' than men when deprivation includes, amongst others, excessive work load and reduced decisionmaking authority. When consumption poverty poorly correlates with other dimensions of deprivation, it should not be the sole guide for equity-based policy intervention. App., bibliogr., notes, ref., sum.
