Abstract:Preface to the new edition by John MCCRACKEN; to the original edition by James RANKIN. John BUCHANAN (1855-1896) in 1876 joined the pioneer Church of Scotland party sent to found the Blantyre Mission. Dismissed from the mission in 1881, he bought land, became a planter, later served as vice-consul and died the wealthiest and best-informed settler in the area. The book is primarily concerned with publicising the economic potential of the Shire Highlands for prospective planters. However, it also provides important information on social and economic life of the Africans as well as descriptions of the three missions active at the time.
