Abstract:This article focuses specifically on the need to weigh benefits and costs before embarking on programmes of international economic sanctions. It draws on experience gained from the study of League of Nations sanctions against Italy in the mid-1930s and on more recent cases, particularly UN sanctions against Rhodesia in the wake of UDI and OAS sanctions on Cuba which were in place from 1964 to 1975.
