Abstract: | This paper deals with the accomodations made to direct taxation by Nsaw, a Tikar chiefdom now some 60.000 strong in the Bamenda grasslands of the Southern Cameroons.Their accomodations involved experiments with the political devices at their disposal, on some occasions under direct pressure from the Administration, on others in response to economic events. The limits on experimentation were set by the traditional delegations of authority and the traditional patterns of political behaviour in Nsaw, but within these limits ingenious accomodations were made. The authors are mainly concerned with the agencies which enforced policy and organized tribute and prestations, the network of communications, and the economy which sustained the social system as it was when the Germans first imposed tax in 1909. |
