Abstract:Describes how Khama III, the Ngwato monarch from 1875 to 1923, benefited from his relations with the British. With the assistance of the Imperial Government he established a powerful monarchy, eliminated all opposition, both actual and potential, and gained control of the traditional sourcds of wealth. At the end of his reign he succdssfull'opposed incorporation into the Union of South Africa. Map, notes.
