| Abstract: | The Queen Mother in Africa is not simply 'important' but an essential ingredient in the nature of royal power and authority. The author presents some new ethnographic material that points away from the exegetical interpretations of de Heusch, who sees the actual role of the Queen-Mother as a secondary one, toward a more socilogical one. Sections: the Pabir kingdom of Biu - the Maigira of Kogu - the installation of the Queen-Mother - the Maigira and the Kingly installation - towards a theory of the Queen-Mother - discussion.
