Abstract: | Ogbe title is the highest title in Ubiaja, if not throughout Ishan. Not even the Enigie (Kings) of Ishan Division and their tradition. al chiefs known as Ekhaebhonlen are exempted from the performance of the Ogbe title ceremony throughout Ishan land. The Ogbe title in Ubiaja originated from Benin. The founder of Ubiaja, a prince from Benin City called Obiaza, brought the system of Ogbe title along with him to enable him govern his subjects. The traditional iocal government of Ubiaja is essentially a monarchy. The Onogie (King) is assisted by representative councils of the several quarters or wards of Ubiaja. By performing the Ogbe title a male adult becomes a member of one of the representative councils, and then is known as Odion. The Odionwele is the most senior Odion. One of the principal duties of the Odion is the interpretation of the customary laws, and to advise the Onogie in traditional matters. The performance of the ceremony of Ogbe title is described. |
